Library of the Faculty of Literature History
The library of the Faculty of Literature of the University of Isfahan was established in 1958 together with the establishment of the Faculty of Humanities in Shahzadeh Ibrahim alley. When the faculties and administrative units of the university were moved to their present location, the library was moved to the eastern side of the university. By the passage of time and with the development of disciplines and departments and thanks to the efforts of the library officials, the library was developed and considerable resources were gathered. Unique collections such as late Mr. Olfat and late Mr. Sadrhashemi’s personal libraries were donated to the library.
When the faculties of Educational Sciences and Foreign Languages were separated from the Faculty of Literature and following the establishment of the Central Library of the university, parts of the mentioned resources were moved to those faculties. The manuscripts were also moved to the central library for extra protection. In 1987 due to a failure in observing security and technical issues the library building together with all its resources and facilities burnt in fire. However, the library was later rebuilt and equipped thanks to Allah’s grace and the serious cooperation of everyone concerned.
Library Resources and Materials
The new library now contains about 75000 books in Persian and other languages. These resources have been collected thanks to the cooperation of the officials and consist of four exquisite personal collections as well as many rich and rare resources which are regarded as invaluable cultural treasures in terms of their content and number. The library, which is 1200 square meters in surface and is built based on a traditional architecture style, has a study room for boys and girls as well as a depository and journals section. Moreover, this library has four specialist libraries related with it which started its activities in 1996 and has been active ever since. The resources available in the library have been categorized based on the Dewey system. Access to book depositories is fully-open to faculty members of the university, half-open to graduate students and closed to others.
Resources can be searched using the library’s computerized search system or by using book cards ordered alphabetically according to the books’ title, writer and subject. The computerized system, which is made up of more than 20 PCs located in the main and satellite libraries, has speeded up the searching process among books. Because of the great variety in the resources available in humanities and also the relative larger number of students studying in this area compared with other disciplines of the university, the number of users of this library is larger than that of other libraries. Reference books, magazines and theses can be used inside library and other resources can be borrowed and used elsewhere.
