In 1997, following years of study and research the educational syllabus for B.A and M.A programs in Guidance and Counseling was announced by the Counseling Branch of the Higher Council of Educational Planning of the Ministry of Culture and Higher Equation. The Universities of Allameh Tabatabaei, Tarbiat Moallem, Shahid Chamran and Isfahan were allowed to launch the B.A program and the universities of Allameh Tabatabaei and Tarbiat Moallem were allowed to establish the M.A program as well. The first group of students were admitted to the B.A program in Guidance and Counseling in 1989 and this has continued ever since. The M.A program in Guidance and Counseling was established in 1998.
When, following the decision made on the 22nd August 1995 by the Higher Council of Educational Planning, the discipline of Guidance and Counseling was renamed to Counseling, the universities all over the country were required to start admitting students to four different subdisciplines. The University of Isfahan was permitted to admit students to the two subdisciplines of Family Counseling and Job Counseling. However, the department has obtained permissions to launch programs in the subdisciplines of School Counseling and Rehabilitation Counseling and is allowed to admit students to these subdisciplines as well. The Higher Council of Educational Planning, in its 313rd meeting held on the 25th of August ,1996 , approved the establishment of PhD programs in Counseling . Subsequently the Universities of Allameh Tabatabaei and Tarbiat Moallem launched their PhD programs.
The University of Isfahan started admitting students to its PhD program in 2006 and 5 students were admitted to the PhD program in General Counseling in the first year. However, the University has continued to admit students to the subdisciplines of Family Counseling and job Counseling ever since. The students are required to complete 18 course credits and 18 research credit (Dissertation). The period of time the students are allowed to complete their course credits and to write their dissertation in completion of the requirements for receiving a PhD degree in Counseling is determined based on the PhD Bylaws enacted by the Higher Council of Educational Planning in their 74th meeting held on 27th February 1994. This period includes the two phases of passing their courses and writing their dissertations. In the educational phase of their studies the PhD students are required to pass their course credits as well as their Comprehensive Examination and then start the research phase of their studies and write their dissertations.
The faculty members of the department include two Assistant Professors and four Associate Professors. Among the necessities of running a PhD program is having a Counseling Center on the University campus as well as numerous centers in the city and governmental organizations. As the primary practice sites for the PhD students of Counseling are the counseling centers in universities, institutes and across cities.
